When an air conditioner breaks down, the question is usually the same: fix it again, or replace it? There's no single answer, but a few signs make it clearer.
Signs a repair makes sense
- The system is relatively young and has been reliable.
- The problem is a single part that wears out, such as a capacitor, a contactor or a fan motor.
- It keeps the house comfortable when it's running.
Signs it may be time to replace
- Age: the system is well into its second decade.
- Repeat repairs: it's needed several repairs in the last couple of years.
- Refrigerant leaks: it keeps losing refrigerant. Finding and fixing leaks on an aging system adds up, and older systems may use refrigerant that's increasingly hard to get.
- A major part has failed: such as the compressor or the outdoor coil, on an older system.
- It can't keep up: some rooms never get comfortable, or the bills keep climbing.
- You want to add heating: replacing it with a heat pump gives you both.
How we help you decide
Our technicians find the cause before recommending a fix, and they'll tell you plainly when a repair is a reasonable bet and when you're likely to be spending money on a system near the end of its life. If replacement makes sense, the quote on new equipment is free, and seasonal manufacturer rebates may lower the cost: see our post on rebates and incentives.
