When Your AC Vent Blows Hot Air: Fixing Your Cooling Woes

Nothing’s worse than cranking up the AC on a sweltering day only to have hot air blowing out. It is vital for you to take note of why this might be happening and what you can do about it.

Check the Thermostat First

Before you panic, make sure your thermostat is set correctly. It might sound silly; however, it’s the first thing to check. Many people do not even think to take this step, and they call in the pros only to find out that this was the problem, and a repair person was never needed. Make sure that the thermostat is set to “Cool,” and the setting is lower than the current temperature in the room. Also, make sure your batteries have not died.

Dirty Filters: The Silent Culprit

The air filter may seem insignificant; however, it is a vital component of your air conditioner. It cleans the air as it passes through. If it’s clogged with dust and debris, it can considerably restrict airflow and prevent your AC from cooling your home efficiently. Check your filter every month, and replace it at least every three months, or sooner if it’s dirty.

One way to check your air filter is to hold it up to the light. If you can see light passing through the mesh, then the filter is still usable. It’s time to change it when you can no longer see light through the mesh because if the light will not pass through, air will not either.

Frozen Evaporator Coils: An Icy Problem

Another problem may be that the evaporator coils might be frozen. This happens when the system can’t remove enough moisture from the air. Check for ice buildup on the coils. If you see ice, turn off the AC and let it thaw naturally.

Refrigerant Issues: A Cooling Crisis

Refrigerant is the magic fluid that cools your home. If there’s a leak in the system, the refrigerant level will drop, and your AC won’t work as efficiently. If this happens, you’ll need to call a professional to recharge or repair the system because handling refrigerant can be extremely dangerous. Not only is this substance highly flammable, but it can also be toxic to the environment if you make one wrong move.

If you’ve checked these things, and your AC is still blowing hot air, it’s time to call in the professionals. An HVAC technician can diagnose the problem and fix it for you. Don’t try to repair your AC yourself.
